Railway City Road Races honours Rob Broadbent
by renaming the half marathon race!

(St. Thomas, ON) – The fifth annual Railway City Road Races (RCRR) will take place Sunday, Sept. 23, 2018 and organizers are pleased to announce that the half marathon distance will now be known as the RCRR Rob Broadbent Half Marathon.

Former St. Thomas Fire Chief Broadbent was a key organizer of the RCRR, an avid runner himself, and it was his leadership and passion that convinced the organizing committee to introduce a half marathon distance race to complement the 5 km and 10 km distances, as well as Choo Choo Challenge for children. In 2017, Broadbent was diagnosed with cancer and he sadly died just weeks before the event.

“We are so pleased to also announce that the St. Thomas Professional Firefighters’ Association has agreed to sponsor this newly named race in honour of their leader, colleague and friend,” says race committee founding member Corinne Roos. “Rob had such a passion for his community, for running, and for helping others and it’s a fitting tribute to a wonderful man.”

Registration is now open for the 2018 event which is in support of St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital (STEGH) Orthopedics Services. To date, RCRR has raised more than $80,000 for STEGH and organizers are confident that this year’s tally will push the event past the $100,000 mark.

More than 520 participants took part in 2017, and each year the event continues to grow. Once again this year, those who register for the half marathon can take advantage of the Port Stanley Terminal Rail train to bring them from the CASO Station to Port Stanley for the start of the race.

“We are fortunate to have tremendous support from our community, both in terms of volunteers and sponsorship which allows us to host a professional race with beautiful routes, chip timing, aid stations, medals and shirts for participants. It really is a labour of love for our committee,” adds Roos.
